How the Overall band is rounded

If the average of the four bands ends below .25 it rounds down, from .25 up to .75 it becomes .5, and from .75 it becomes the next whole band. An average of 6.25 is already an Overall 6.5.

    Frequently asked questions

How is the IELTS Overall band calculated?
Add the four section bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), divide by four and round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to .5 and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For example 7.0, 7.0, 6.5 and 6.5 average 6.75, so the Overall is 7.0.
How many Listening answers do I need for 7.0?
Usually 30 out of 40. 32 is typically 7.5 and 26 is 6.5. The cut-offs can move by one or two answers between test versions, so leave a margin.
Why do Academic and General Training reading tables differ?
General Training passages are everyday and workplace texts, so the same band needs more correct answers. For 7.0, Academic needs about 30 and General Training about 34. Listening uses the same table for both.
Can I use it without Writing and Speaking bands?
Yes. Pick a target and the calculator works out what Writing and Speaking need, given your Listening and Reading. Useful when a mock test only covered the two reading-and-listening papers.
Will this match my real result?
The conversion tables are the widely published ones; real cut-offs can move by one or two answers with test difficulty. The Overall rounding follows the official rule exactly. Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners, so the values you enter are used as given.
