IELTS Speaking tutoring
IELTS Speaking tutoring
Speaking is the one part of IELTS you still sit face to face with an examiner. A Band 9.0 instructor who taught IELTS at Pagoda Academy into a 14th year runs the test in its real order and listens back to find where the marks leak.

Who this is for
Fluent enough, but stuck at 6.0
You can hold a conversation but the score does not move. Usually the answers end too soon, or Part 3 ideas are never developed.
Your mind goes blank in the test
Weekly practice in the real order gives you a way into the first sentence, even for questions you have never seen.
Your answers sound memorised
Examiners notice memorised answers. Instead of scripts we build a way of speaking that works for any topic.
What separates 6.0 from 7.0
Speaking is marked on four criteria, and Korean speakers tend to stop at 6 in the same places.
-
Fluency is not speed
Band 7 speaks at length without noticeable effort. What matters is not speed but keeping the idea going without stopping to search for content.
-
Part 3 is extended with reasons and examples
Ending on one short opinion keeps you at 6. We practise widening each answer with a reason, an example and the opposite case.
-
Pronunciation: stress rhythm, not accent
Korean gives every syllable equal time, so missing English stress rhythm holds you at 6 however clear you are. Accent itself is not scored.
-
Your Part 2 notes decide the two minutes
You still get paper and pencil for one minute of Part 2 notes. What you write decides whether you fill two minutes or stop at one.
How lessons run
-
The real test order
Part 1, 2 and 3 at test timing, then straight away what was band 7 and what was band 6.
-
Feedback from the recording
We listen to the recording and mark vocabulary, fluency and pronunciation. Next lesson you answer the same question again, fixed.
-
This season's topics
The Speaking question bank rotates every four months. Practising this season's likely topics means fewer surprises.
A Speaking practice example
An invented example to explain the approach, not a student result. Text alone cannot show pronunciation, pauses or delivery, so no Speaking band is assigned.
What do you like about the area where you live?
I like my area because it is convenient. There are many things. It is very good.
Feedback
The answer is relevant, but “many things” and “very good” do not tell the listener much. Choose one real feature and explain how you use it. Keep the answer natural rather than memorising a longer script.
One possible revision
I like how easy it is to get around. The subway station is a five-minute walk from my flat, so I can get to work without driving.
Record it again
Use a detail from your own neighbourhood and record a fresh answer. Listening to the recording lets us check pacing and intelligibility as well as language; the written version cannot establish those.
